ONE of the town’s leading boxing gyms is hoping for a knockout year after landing a cash boost.

The Doncaster Plant Works club in Hexthorpe recently received a New Deal for Communities (NDC) grant just shy of £1,000.

The money will go towards replacing worn sparring gloves, punch balls and skipping ropes.

Head coach Ken Blood said the grant will help to nurture some of Doncaster’s most talented youngsters.

He said: “I can guarantee that after school for about three or four hours the club will be heaving.

“We have about twenty boys aged ten to sixteen, almost thirty ABA registered adults and more than fifteen people who love to come and spar and train with us in the gym.

“We have some youngsters, aged twelve or thirteen, that are really good for their age and if they work hard they will blossom.

“We are one of the best amateur boxing clubs in the country, but we couldn’t nurture this talent without the financial help of organisations such as NDC.

“We are really grateful.”
