Woodlands Park Bowls Club are flying the flag for the town in the National Super Cup.

Park have reached the last 16 of the prestigious competition - which attracts 128 of the top teams in the country - for the first time.

After disposing of highly-fancied Midlands side The George in the last round, Woodlands will now face Stoke-based Birches Head Hotel.

The winners of the two-leeged tie will go through to the competition’s newly-introduced finals day in October.

“We know there are a lot of good teams still involved, but we don’t feel out of place,” said Park spokesman Barry Connolly.

“We’ve consistently been one of the top sides in Doncaster for a number of years and we’ve got some very experienced bowlers.

“We play at a high standard and as well as playing in the South Yorkshire Super Cup on a weekend, we play in Division Two of the Mirfield League on a Tuesday.

“There are ten divisions and the Mirfield League is probably the strongest in the country.”

Woodlands will go into the last 16 clash buoyed their performance against The George.

“They were one of the favourites, given the quality of their bowlers,” said Barry.

“Almost all of them have played at county level.”

Park hosted the first leg and were always confident of victory despite the strength of the opposition.

“It’s a tough green to read with different pace in different areas, so it’s always an advantage playing there,” said Barry.

Woodlands won the first leg by 27 points, a margin they feared might not be enough given the Birmingham club’s home record.

Their fears were allayed with a battling performance that restricted their hosts to a 23-point winning margin. Martin Wilson, in particular, produced some excellent bowls.
