Danum Eagles remain top of the Midlands Conference with just three games left to play following a resounding 102-49 win at Derby.
Mathew Martin contributed 30 points as the Eagles netted their 13th straight league victory ahead of this weekend’s potential title-decider against Loughborough Student Riders II.
After a two-week break Danum were ready for action and came out of the blocks at a lightning pace, establishing a 31-7 lead after the first quarter.
An 8-0 run from the Eagles to start the second quarter extended the lead further, Josh Metcalf hitting his second and third three-pointers of the game to keep the Eagles’ offence firing, while the travelling fans were treated to the finest defensive display of the season so far, restricting Derby to only 23 points in the half.
The second quarter was capped off by a buzzer beating effort from Eagles guard James Brough which ripped through the net from deep in his own half, extending the score to 61-23 at the break.
The Trailblazers came out after the half time interval with a renewed vigour and began to find their shooting touch, almost doubling their total from the first half in the third quarter alone.
It took the Eagles five minutes to register any points in the quarter, Mark Baker eventually breaking the dry spell with six consecutive points, followed by six from George Colwill.
The unbeaten Eagles went into the final quarter with a 77-44 lead.
A dominant fourth quarter at both ends of the floor ensured that the Eagles remain undefeated ahead of Saturday’s huge game with Loughborough.
Martin poured in 10 of his game-high 30 points to help the travelling Eagles to a 102-49 victory.
Eagles still have Loughborough, Nottingham Hoods II and Sporting Club Albion to play this season.
