MORE than 160 of the best boxers from universities around the country will descend on Balby Carr Sports Academy this weekend.
The school will play host to the inaugural English University Boxing Series on Saturday and Sunday with 30 universities represented.
The Series has been organised by the Amateur Boxing Association of England and aims to increase participation and provide a better competitive experience for students.
Taking a different format than the established student championships, universities will go head to head to accumulate points and look to be top of the table at the end of the season.
The first round of the Series will be held over two weekends with the finals on January 28 and 29.
ABA programmes and participation manager Tom Gilbert said: “The format of the Series will allow students to get more experience in of competition and will create better links and competitiveness between universities.
“Hopefully it will raise boxing’s profile in univesities and will encourage more students to give it a try, either to improve overall fitness or to compete.”
