A DETERMINED teenager has lost over a stone in weight to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer, and has just competed in the ABA Schoolboy championships.
Rising star Ryan Boyle (pictured), 14, has taken to running every single day and training hard under top level coaching at Doncaster South Boxing Centre to achieve his ultimate aim.
Following the Cantley youngster’s efforts, the committed sportsman has dropped from 52kg (around 8st 1lb) to 45kg (just over 7st).
The former Ken Blood Doncaster Plant Works’ ABC member also took part in the Wakefield-based championships on Sunday, facing a tough competitor from Burmantofts ABC who has only been defeated twice in his fledgling career.
South paw Boyle started well and had to dig deep, upping the tempo in the third round under the watchful eye of dad and coach Colin.
However, his opponent was awarded a narrow points victory.
Despite the loss, the Hall Cross School pupil is continuing to train hard at the boxing centre in Rossington before his next competition in Stoke on February 13.
Boyle’s proud dad Colin said: “He’s done so well to lose the weight.
“A lot of lads would’ve packed in but he’s deadly serious about his boxing and wants to get better.
“You can tell how hard he’s worked because he is a lot stronger and fitter, he’s pushing the bigger lads back in sparring.
“He really wants to succeed and wants to be like Maxi Hughes who is also a former Doncaster Plant Works boxer.
“He came up against a good lad at the Schoolboy championships, both started well and in the third round I sent Ryan out to meet his opponent head on which he did and looked the stronger of the two.
“At the end, I thought he might have got it but it went the other way which is no shame for Ryan. He boxed well against a lad with a good record and there was only a point or two in it.”
