Relegation-threatened Rovers must win at Crewe to maintain any realistic hope of avoiding a return to the fourth tier of English football for the first time in more than a decade.

A record-breaking Knights team then face Yorkshire Carnegie in the Championship play-off semi-finals bidding to reach the Aviva Premiership for the first time in the club’s history.

Darren Ferguson’s men have taken seven points from a possible nine after failing to win in 16 consecutive league games to give themselves a glimmer of hope of survival.

But they travel to Crewe on Saturday with the odds still stacked against a great escape - and they could be mathematically relegated on Monday if they fail to collect three points against the Railwaymen.

A season of underachievement at the Keepmoat Stadium, however, is in stark contrast to the exploits of Knights who head into the promotion play-offs on the back of a second-placed finish in the Championship, the club’s best ever final league position.

Clive Griffiths’ team make the short journey to Leeds on Sunday to tackle Carnegie, ahead of the return leg at Castle Park a week on Sunday.
