Joe gets England call

Joe Sutherland

Joe Sutherland

MARTIAL arts maestro Joe Sutherland is back in the England squad after kicking off the new season in style.

The ten-year-old kickboxer landed a title double at the recent WKC English Qualifiers in Manchester and has been chosen to represent his country in Italy later this year.

Last year Sutherland, of Hatfield, made his debut on the international scene, becoming one of the youngest ever competitors to wear an England jersey at the World Kickboxing Council World Championships in Canada.

A double gold medal haul in Manchester, including a first place finish in an unfamiliar Extreme Martial Arts, category earned the youngster another shot a claiming a world title.

His mother Gemma said: “Joe had an amazing 2012, winning eight British titles and a world title, and he’s started the competition season with a bang.

“He’s had a rest over Christmas Break but now he’s ready and focused to take on what ever is thrown his way.

“Joe’s been winning on the competitive circuit but he’s also making a name for himself on a performance level too, he’s been asked to perform in an opening parade at Disney Land in Paris.”

A first degree black belt, Sutherland specialises in freestyle forms.

Joe is on the look-out for sponsors. Anyone interested should email sport@doncastertoday.co.uk.
