Rugby Union: Wheatley bid to plug gap

Wheatley Hills player-coach Dave Scully hasn’t given up hope of catching promotion rivals Beverley at the top of the North One East League, writes Matthew Howarth.

The Doncaster club are second in the table, but trail the league leaders by 13 points after suffering three defeats in the last five matches.

Although they are two points ahead of third-placed Morley, Scully says the team is looking up the table, not down.

“We all want to close that gap between us and Beverley at the top.

“It is a big one, but we’ll keep plugging away and won’t lose hope until it’s mathematically impossible to catch them.

“It’s just as important that we consolidate second place to secure at least a play-off spot.”

Scully’s side face relegation-threatened Keighley on Saturday - a game that was postponed earlier this month due to heavy snow.

The West-Yorkshire club are currently in the relegation zone, a point adrift of Middlesbrough in 11th.

Despite their precarious position near the foot of the league, Scully is keen not to underestimate his opponents.

“I’ve never been to Keighley in my life, but we have to remain focused.”

“We have to show respect to the opposition and if we do, I’m confident we can come away with a win.”

If they finish second, Wheatley Hills would face a play-off match with the runners-up in the North One West league, with the winners promoted to National League Three North.
