DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Davey’s ref rage

BRETT Davey slammed referee Greg MacDonald after watching his Knights side slip to a last kick defeat against high flying Bedford.
Davey waited for MacDonald at the head of the tunnel at Castle Park just seconds after Josh Bassett’s converted try gave Bedford a 22-21 win on Friday night.
And Davey was still fuming when he spoke to the Free Press earlier this week.
MacDonald has come in for criticism from Davey already this season after he sent off Adam Kettle at Leeds Carnegie.
Davey said: “We made our feelings known about the referee when we found out about the appointment because of what went on at Leeds.
“And it’s safe to say there are a few issues again after this game.
“I can’t say too much because I’ll be in trouble but all that we want is consistency from the officials.
“I’m very upset about what went on and it’s massively disappointing because that takes away from what was a very good performance.”
The Knights put on perhaps their best show of the season so far and were desperately unlucky to fall to a last minute score which came ten minutes into stoppage time.
The usual free-running Bedford were restricted to few attacks as Doncaster’s forwards took control.
And Davey was very pleased with the performance.
“We played really well for 75 minutes but things went against us late on,” he said.
“They got into our 22 once in the first 40 minutes and anyone who knows Bedford will tell you how impressive it is to restrict them to that.
“The forwards were magnificent in their performances, they just battled and battled.
“We deserved to get a lot more out of that game than what we did – we were 22-10 up against the team second in the league.”
The Knights are without a game this weekend with the Championship XV taking centre stage at Castle Park against the Maori All Blacks.
They return to action with a trip to Nottingham on November 25 ahead of a crucial clash with Jersey.
Davey believes the break will suit his squad.
He said: “The break has probably come at the right time for us because we’re carrying a few knocks and it also gives us the opportunity to get people’s confidence back up after what happened last Friday.
“We’re very pleased with the improvement that we’re making week on week and I really think we’re not that far away from things really clicking into place.
“What we did in the first half at Rotherham and then for the majority of the game against a side second in the table is a big statement of how much we are improving.
“We’re winning that battle within the club.”
