Jordan eyes Strong Man crown
TEENAGE powerlifter Jordan Haycock just keeps on raising the bar!
The 18-year-old giant - who weighs in at 23 stone and stands 6'4" tall -recently burst on to the regional competition scene in record-breaking style.
Now he wants to fulfill his lifetime ambition and lift the title of Britain's Strongest Man.
Haycock, a member of Adwick Powerlifting Club, broke the Under 18 British record for combined weights on his South Yorkshire Unequipped Open debut in May.
He lifted an impressive combined total of 505kg in three goes - courtesy of a squat, bench press and dead lift.
But even better followed when he travelled to Northumberland for the Yorkshire and North East Unequipped where he totalled 540kg and also set a new British squat record of 180kg.
Haycock, from Bircotes, then broke the British combined record for a third time - in only his third attempt - by lifting 545kg in the third annual Roses match between Yorkshire and Lancashire at Colne earlier this month.
And if that wasn't enough the former Serlby Park School pupil squatted 190kg to keep his superb record-breaking form going.
His mother Tina said: "Jordan's achieved so much in such a short space of time.
"His father and I are very proud of the dedication and enthusiasm he has shown.
"Hopefully he'll go on to achieve a lot more in the sport.
"He's watched Britain's Strongest Man on the television from a very young age and it's always been his ambition to give it a go," she added.
"And the route he has to take to be in with a chance of qualifying is through powerlifting.
"He's done really well because he only started training last year.
"Then he joined the gym owned by Gary Lister, a former Mr Universe, in Harworth.
"He works on the railway too - lifting sleepers around - so he's getting plenty of practice!
"He's also on a very strict protein diet so he's giving himself every chance of succeeding."
Jordan is a member of the Great British Powerlifting Federation.
He currently takes part in unequipped events in which competitors rely solely on their own strength and technique when they are lifting weights.
But he eventually hopes to graduate to equipped powerlifting which permits the use of special suits and knee wraps - which can be expensive to buy.
