Victory keeps Haxey side on top

Gainsborough Sunday League Division Three

Kings Arms 3rds 3

Stanwood Engineering 1

THE Haxey side maintained its promotion push as it overcame bottom side Stanwood with a brace from Phil Palmer and a penalty from Darren Spry.

Kings were quickest out of the blocks as they raced into a second minute lead, Palmer volleying past the keeper after Spry beat his opponent to cross following a through ball from Mick Johnson.

The hosts should have increased their advantage but Spry was guilty of some poor finishing and Kings keeper Dean Smith preserved the slender lead with a save just before half time.

After the break the home side continued to press with Spry rounding the keeper only to be thwarted by the post and another shot was cleared off the line.

On 55 minutes Palmer scored his, and the Haxey side’s, second after he found the top left hand corner when put through by Ali McGuire.

The visitors, though, refused to submit and halved the deficit ten minutes later when Craig Beardall outfoxed Smith in a one-on-one situation.

Kings increased the tempo as they sought to regain their two goal advantage and on 85 minutes they were awarded a penalty when Spry was scythed down in the area.

The 38-year-old picked himself up to make it 3-1, albeit via the post and the keeper’s back.

Man of the match was left winger Steve Makins.

Kings Arms 3rds remain joint-top, second on goal difference to leaders Walkeringham.

Their next match is on Sunday, November 20, a home cup match versus Canutes at Westwoodside Playing Field.
