SHEFFIELD United’s efforts to capture Dominic Poleon from Leeds could hinge on whether their Yorkshire rivals are able to sign attacking reinforcements, writes James Shield.

Danny Wilson confirmed he would be “interested” in recruiting the 19-year-old following Saturday’s League One victory over Shrewsbury Town.

But Neil Warnock, Wilson’s counterpart at Elland Road, is loath to let Poleon leave unless the Championship club can enter the emergency loan market themselves.

Despite new financial measures limiting expenditure on players, The Star can reveal that United enquired about the youngster just hours before last month’s deadline for permanent signings.

Although Warnock was initially receptive, he is understood to have told his former club that Luciano Becchio’s move to Norwich meant he could not entertain the idea unless suitable cover for striker Steve Morison was identified.

Nevertheless, despite continuing talks about Poleon’s availability after Jonathan Forte became their fourth acquisition of the transfer window, United could still be forced to offload members of the squad before making a fresh approach: “Yes, Dominic is someone we are interested in,” Wilson said. “Because we think he’s got something to offer us. But that’s all I’m saying because he’s not our player.

“I’m only saying it because I’ve been asked a question and I prefer to reply truthfully. There’s nothing active at present but we have looked at him.”

Poleon scored three goals in seven appearances during a recent loan spell at Bury, where United return to action tomorrow evening.

Meanwhile, Wilson’s side climbed to fifth in the table after second-half efforts from Michael Doyle and Dave Kitson ensured their first ever visit to Greenhous Meadow ended on a positive note.

Stephen McGinn scored a late consolation for the hosts but Wilson said the result would ease the pressure on winger Jamie Murphy following his recent arrival from Motherwell.

“That should do us the power of good and Jamie in particular. That win will help him relax and not be as anxious. We saw lots of examples out there about why we brought him in and what a quality player he is.”
