Rovers have handed apprentice forms to 11 players, including several promising youngsters from the town.

Forwards Lewis Ferguson, Billy Whitehouse and Callum Terrell attend Balby Carr, Mexborough and Campsmount schools respectively while midfielder Jack Steadman is a Trinity Academy pupil.

The intake of young talent includes a pair of identical twins.

Spencer and Mitchell Lund are the youngest of the new intake and will not turn 16 until August.

The pair are from Kippax, West Yorkshire, with Spencer playing in midfield while Mitchell is a defender.

Also signing is left sided defender Jacob Dawson from Worksop and Knottingley centre half Scott Brown who have both come through the Rovers Centre of Excellence.

The scouting net has been spread wider this year and unearthed a trio from further afield.

Goalkeeper Callum Myers from Scarborough, Middlesbrough centre half Ben Askins and striker Ryan Burnyeat from Tyne and Wear have all signed up.

Rovers head of youth Paul Wilson says the club fended off competition to sign the group.

He said: There was quite a bit of competition for some of the players but we got in early, brought them along for a game and fortunately they liked what they saw.

“We had some outstanding youngsters last season and they will be a hard act to follow.

“But the standard this year is very good as well.

“It all depends on how they knuckle down and adapt because they have to grow up very quickly.

The new group will join seven second-year apprentices for next season.
