Newcastle United teenager Mehdi Abeid linked with move to Doncaster Rovers
Newcastle United's Mehdi Abeid has been linked with Rovers.
DONCASTER Rovers are reportedly ready to swoop for Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid - but could face competition from Leeds United for his signature.
Algerian Under-23 international Abeid has been granted permission to leave the Magpies on loan and Doncaster are said to be in pole position to land him, according to reports in the North East.
The 19-year-old has made just two appearances for Newcastle this term - in the Carling Cup and FA Cup.
He impressed in both games but Toon boss Alan Pardew cannot guarantee the youngster first team football as United’s first choice central midfield pair Cheick Tioté and Yohan Cabaye prepare return to the fray this weekend.
Toon boss Alan Pardew said: “We are trying to get Abeid out. He needs to play regular football for us.”
Newcastle have circulated Abeid’s name to clubs in the Championship and League One - and there is plenty of interest.
Doncaster’s strong French-speaking presence in the dressing room, however, is thought to have put them in front in the race for his signature.
Leeds are also thought to be interested after losing loan star Fabian Delph for the rest of the season through injury.
