DONCASTER Rovers are expected to complete the signing of Habib Beye following his release from Aston Villa.

Beye has been on loan at the Keepmoat since November but will become a full time Rovers player after reaching a mutual agreement with Villa over the cancellation of his contract.

It is understood Beye’s deal with Doncaster will include the option of a further year.

The Senegalese defender is expected to take a major cut to join Rovers as it is understood his wages at Villa Park amounted to £45,000.

The Premier League side continued to pay the vast majority of his wages while he was on loan with Rovers.

The Villa board are keen to make savings wherever possible as they counter several years of big spending and were determined to thrash out a deal that was satifactory for both parties.

Beye managed just 17 appearances since joining Villa in August 2009 for £2.6m following a successful two year stint with Newcastle United.

And boss Alex McLeish saw no way back into the side for the centre half.

He said: “When I came in it was a clean slate.

“I looked at everybody and I felt it was difficult with Habib.

“We spoke about the finances as well.

“It was difficult to have players on really high wages as your third back up.

“It is impossible for you to sustain a club at that level.

“So we made a conscious decision to try and shift Habib and free up wages and I felt that a few others were ahead of him.

“Chris Herd was ahead and Alan Hutton was ahead and we had Luke Young at one time as well, not forgetting Eric Lichaj, so we made a conscious decision to try and shift him.

“There was no offence and no hard feelings.”

The 34-year-old is currently serving a three match suspension following his dismissal at Bristol City and should return to action against Blackpool on February 14.
