DEAN Saunders has swooped to make French defender Pascal Chimbonda his first new signing at Doncaster Rovers.

Chimbonda, 32, was a spectator at the Keepmoat Stadium for Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Hull City.

The former Tottenham and Wigan full back then played for an hour at left back in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Chesterfield on Wednesday afternoon - before agreeing terms on a short-term deal till January.

Chimbonda, a free agent after he was released by QPR in April, started his career with spells at Le Havre and Bastia in France.

He moved to Wigan in 2005 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best full backs.

The Guadeloupe-born defender joined Tottenham for £4.5 million in August 2006 and clinched a League Cup winners medal two years later.

But he struggled to recapture the type of form he showed in his early Premier League days during subsequent spells at Sunderland, Tottenham and Blackburn.

His capture is a major coup for new boss Dean Saunders, who has said he would like to add several new faces to his squad as he attempts to lift Rovers off the bottom of the Championship.

Chimbonda could make his Doncaster debut at Peterborough on Saturday, although the deal to sign him is still subject to a medical and league clearance.
