DONCASTER ROVERS: We’ve got characters in abundance, says Dean Saunders
CAPTAIN sensible Rob Jones is putting his teaching background to good use at Doncaster Rovers - by keeping the club’s youngsters in check!
Dean Saunders this week revealed to the Free Press who he sees as the strongest characters in the Doncaster dressing room.
Unsurprisingly, Jones is at the top of the list.
The 32-year-old, who was a teacher before he became a professional footballer, does not suffer fools gladly - and he is not shy of a word or two when needed.
Those social skills are a godsend to boss Saunders, who is keen to mix youth with experience on the training ground and in the first team.
Saunders said: “Rob Jones is a natural leader.
“But we need four or five like him.
“As a manager you need players who can help you do your job - so that certain things don’t even get to me.
“People like Rob sort things out before they get to me.
“Not just in football but in society in general, younger players are harder to discipline.
“I need some help with that - and people like Rob are there to put the young lads straight before it gets to me.
“It’s not just Rob. James Harper is doing well in that respect for me.
“Jamie McCombe’s a good character too. So is Dave Syers.
“We’re lucky because we’ve got a few strong characters at the club and that can only be a good thing.”
