Doncaster Rovers: Karl Robinson demands more from stuttering Dons
Plenty to ponder: MK Dons boss Karl Robinson says his side must work harder if they are to address their recent slump. Picture: jonathan gawthorpe
BRIAN Flynn is not the only manager in League One attempting to light a fire under a faltering side.
But the task for MK Dons boss Karl Robinson is arguably a much more pressing one after they slipped eight points shy of the final play off place on Saturday.
Robinson told his players they did not work hard enough as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at managerless strugglers Oldham on Saturday.
And he made a rare apology to chairman Pete Winkleman following the loss, such was the manner of the performance.
“I’ve had 150 games in charge and I’ve never said sorry to the chairman,” Robinson said.
“I apologised to him on behalf of that group.
“They all know what I think of them individually. I’ve told them where they went wrong.
“It’s stand up and be counted time. I can’t defend it.
“It doesn’t take someone who has been qualified for seven or eight years to work out what was wrong with that.
“A person who’d never been to a football match would say ‘that blue team worked harder than the white team’. That’s how basic it was.
“They didn’t do what they were told,” he added.
“I’ll take responsibility for that, but they need to take a big part of the responsibility.
“It’s an embarrassing point when someone who has been out for so long in Luke Chadwick comes on and makes such a difference.
“Why did we lose? We didn’t work hard enough.”
The Boundary Park loss was the Dons’ third straight defeat since booking their spectacular 4-2 win over QPR in the FA Cup.
The Dons host Barnsley in the fifth round on Saturday.
Striker Ryan Lowe and defender Antony Kay will both continue their suspensions tonight following red cards in the defeats to Bournemouth and Yeovil respectively.
Influential midfielder Stephen Gleeson (foot) and on loan Patrick Bamford (hamstring) are both out.
