DONCASTER ROVERS: George’s Friend-ly gesture

George Friend

GEORGE Friend waived “thousands of pounds” owed to him by Doncaster Rovers when he left to join Middlesbrough, it has been revealed.

Friend signed a three-year contract at Boro in the summer after a two-year stay at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The popular defender’s magnanimous good-will gesture will not come as a surprise to those people who know him well.

Intelligent and articulate, you could say Friend is not your average footballer - and his generous gesture is certainly not typical in the modern game.

“It’s true,” said Rovers boss Dean Saunders about Friend’s gesture.

“George gave up some money because he knows the club had to cut its budget.

“He obviously wanted to go and play in the league above, which you can understand.

“But he was really disappointed to leave because he felt he could help us get back up.

“George is a dream player to work with,” he added.

“I’ve got two daughters and I wouldn’t mind if they both brought George home. That’s as highly as I can talk about him really.”

Friend, 25, has quickly became a firm favourite at the Riverside Stadium, earning a reputation as a marauding left back after replacing Joe Bennett who joined Aston Villa.

The former Exeter and Wolves man made 64 appearances for Rovers and also wore the captain’s armband on several occasions.
