Doncaster Rovers: Flynn and Jones get players’ vote
PLAYER power played a part in the permanent appointment of Brian Flynn and Rob Jones, The Star understands.
The timing of the little and large duo’s unveiling came as something of a surprise to supporters, with an appointment not expected until after this weekend’s visit of Leyton Orient.
But behind the scenes this week, following a performance full of grit and character at Stevenage, the wheels on the Flynn and Jones bandwagon have been gathering pace.
Flynn is thought to have applied for the position after Saturday’s superb comeback win.
A shortlist of candidates was drawn up by the board, including former Rovers legend Glynn Snodin, St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas, Oldham Athletic’s Paul Dickov and former England caretaker boss Peter Taylor.
Ex-Hull City manager Phil Brown and former Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine are also thought to have applied for the job.
But chairman John Ryan and his fellow shareholders made a beeline for Flynn following the seamless transition since Dean Saunders’ departure for Wolves.
According to Star sources, the board were also approached by at least one member of the playing squad, who emphasised the current unity and harmony in the Rovers ranks.
Ryan said: “Brian has a great history at the club and is being assisted by our current captain Rob Jones, who has earned the respect of his teammates and fans through his commanding leadership.
“We had an overwhelming number of applications for the position, including former international and Premier League managers.
“However, after a detailed process we felt that Brian was the best person to put in charge, allowing a seamless transition.”
