Doncaster Rovers: Brian Flynn wants to taste top spot

BRIAN Flynn takes no consolation from the fact Doncaster Rovers have remained in the automatic promotion places despite taking just two points from the last four games.
The dour 1-1 draw at Crawley Town on Monday night was Rovers’ fourth game without a win.
But the point earned ensured they finished the round of games second in League One, level on points with leaders Bournemouth.
However, the message from Flynn was very much one of missed opportunities.
He said: “I’m not relieved that we’re still second because we’ve had chances to go top and not taken them.
“Top spot is something that we’ve not tasted yet. I want to taste it and I hope the players want to taste it as well. I get that sense from them, there seems to be a disappointment that we’re only second. That disappointment is a good thing for me because they’re not settling for second best.
“We just can’t keep giving other teams the chance to get on top of us.”
Flynn conducted a lengthy post game inquest in the dressing room where the players were given a chance to air their views.
He believes his side’s work without the ball has been the cause of the recent slip and admitted he felt standards dipped once more on Monday.
“It’s important that you can make life difficult for the opposition when you haven’t got the ball,” Flynn said.
“We were much better at that against MK Dons but it definitely slipped again on Monday. We need to be better when we’ve lost the ball.
“We’ve lacked composure which is a vital ingredient for you to play well.
“I think the players want to do it but it’s just about being clever and having that football intelligence.”
Flynn refused to blame a mounting injury list on the recent slump and insists Rovers’ squad is good enough to compete for promotion, even when players are missing.
Martin Woods returned to the treatment table this week after straining his inner thigh in training on Sunday while Paul Keegan was not passed fit in time to travel to Crawley. While confident in the players at his disposal, Flynn concedes he will need to make additions.
He said: “Generally, the dressing room is still good enough to be where we are. But I must admit we do need reinforcements.”
