Doncaster Rovers: Brian Flynn gets the big job

BRIAN Flynn is the man Doncaster Rovers hope will lead them back to the Championship.
The 57-year-old was officially appointed as Dean Saunders’ successor yesterday after Rovers’ search for a permanent manager reached a sudden and swift conclusion.
Flynn was appointed till the end of the season at a pre-arranged board meeting, marking a return to club management for the experienced Welshman following an eight-year absence.
Joint interim manager and influential skipper Rob Jones was also handed a player coach role.
Flynn said: “Continuity is key, I’ve been here six months and in charge for ten days.
“Nothing is broken, so nothing needs to change.”
The Star understands Flynn was Rovers’ first choice to replace Saunders throughout the process of advertising the vacancy.
Saturday’s superb comeback win at Stevenage, and the respect the squad has for both Flynn and Jones, were instrumental in the appointments.
Chief executive Gavin Baldwin and the club’s co-owners had been expected to finalise their shortlist yesterday after sifting through applications on Tuesday.
But Flynn emerged as the preferred candidate during discussions earlier in the week and was offered the job after a training session on the Keepmoat Stadium’s artificial pitches.
Flynn, who captained Doncaster in the late 1980s, was recruited by Saunders in August to bolster the club’s scouting network.
He will take charge of his first game as permanent manager tomorrow at home to Leyton Orient.
