SAINT Billy Sharp has thanked Doncaster Rovers fans and his teammates after ending his two-year love affair with the club.

The 25-year-old was unveiled as a Southampton player last night and although he admitted he was “gutted” to leave Doncaster, he said the opportunity to join the promotion chasers was too good to turn down.

Sharp told Southampton’s official website: “I’m delighted. It has been a long time coming, but I am delighted to get it done, and now I am just looking forward to getting on the pitch and showing the fans what I can do.

“It’s a massive club with huge ambitions, and that is the main reason.

“The gaffer and his coaching team was another reason and it felt right in my head too.

“I can’t wait to get on with the challenge.

“I got on well with the fans at Doncaster and had an amazing time there and I’m gutted that I had to leave.

“That said, I am delighted that I am here and joining a really big club with a strong squad of players, hopefully I can be a cog in the team that helps get this huge club into the Premier League.

“I haven’t signed to get away from the things that have been well publicised, and people thought I wouldn’t sign here because I like Yorkshire too much,” he added.

“That’s not the case, I just happened to be around Yorkshire for most of my career, but the time felt right to make this move and I’m absolutely delighted.

“I’ve gone from second bottom to second top, so that’s not bad for a day’s work!”

Last night Sharp also tweeted: “Sad day leaving Doncaster today great memories enjoyed every minute so thankyou to all the fans and my team mates u have been amazing.

“But also delighted to have joined Southampton cant wait to get started.”
