Mexborough Athletic Ladies recorded their first home win of their debut season after beating Socrates 3-1.

Beginning the fixture in sixth place and three points clear of Socrates, whom they beat 3-2 back in December, Mexborough battled the elements to make the perfect start after just 20 seconds.

The goal came through Tasha Carlton who curled an effort beyond the ‘keeper from the edge of the area.

Abi Gallup then levelled the Sheffield & Hallam County League Division Two encounter on 38 minutes.

Both sides later hit the woodwork and chances were few and far between before Mexborough struck twice in quick succession in the final stages of the game.

Carlton restored the advantage on 77 minutes when she hammered home a loose ball after her initial shot was well kept out by the opposition goalkeeper.

Lisa Hill made sure of maximum points four minutes later when she followed up after her initial shot came back off the post.

The victory sees Mexborough on nine points and looking ahead to the mouth-watering prospect of welcoming neighbours Swinton, the league’s bottom club, to the Miners Welfare & Athletic on Sunday.

The last time the pair met was back in October when Mexborough dished out an 11-0 thumping.
