Doncaster Belles (Women) beat Rovers Foundation 2-1 in the North East Regional Women’s Football League Cup (southern section) first round as the winter season commenced in conditions more suited to winter than summer.
Belles had the backing of a very strong wind in a first half punctuated with a few inclement bursts of rain in a game played on Keepmoat Stadium’s pitch two.
Gabi Marriott put Belles head after 13 minutes when she fired in a loose ball after home keeper Kelly Meadows did well to get down and nick the ball away from a Belles attacker.
Lauren Cuttell doubled the advantage just past the half hour mark, netting from the edge of the area.
Belles keeper Sam Bowen made a key save shortly afterwards to tip over a rasping shot from Hayley Rhodes.
Rovers halved the deficit on the hour when Tara Fisher converted a penalty after Gemma Harte was brought down and the hosts almost forced extra time with Rhodes hitting a post and Fisher going inches wide in the closing stages.
Belles have a bye in the second round and then host the winners of the Wakefield against Barnsley tie.
Both teams resume action on August 31 when the Southern Division fixtures start.
