Thorne Colliery’s opening Central Midlands League Northern Division game of the season against visiting Ollerton Town was abandoned after 30 minutes.

The referee is understood to have called a halt to proceedings after hearing an alleged racist comment on the field of play.

League officials are expected to discuss the incident upon receiving the referee’s report.

Thorne were leading 1-0 at the time.

Bentley Colliery had to settle for a share of the spoils against visiting Clay Cross Town.

Ash Hunter put Bentley ahead but Ant Lynam struck either side of half time for Town.

Matty Brown’s late penalty earned his side a 2-2 draw.

Harworth Colliery, who finished fourth last season, made a disappointing start by losing 2-1 at home to Dinnington Town.

Promoted Town went ahead through Brad Parker.

Kenzie Tomlinson levelled for Harworth but Chris Kirk settled the contest with a 75th minute winner.

Neither Brodsworth Welfare or Askern were in action on the opening day of the campaign, both making midweek starts.
