A BELLES squad down to the bare bones gave Everton and their Team GB stars a good run for their money - but defeat kept them at the foot of the FA Women's Super League.
Boss John Buckley was only able to name two substitutes for the first of four home games in quick succession at the Keepmpoat.
Everton on the other hand included Olympic call-ups Rachel Brown, Fara Williams and Jill Scott in their starting line-up.
And the visitors' extra quality and experience told as Toni Duggan scored twice to earn a neat and tidy Everton side the points.
With the game seemingly drifting towards the interval goalless, Duggan broke the deadlock when she received the ball in the box and smartly blasted home, celebrating with her own version of the Mo Farah 'Mobot'.
Belles had been restricted to long range efforts from Alyssa Lagonia and Tori Williams, and they were struggling to make any inroads when Duggan scored an even better second goal midway through the second half.
She picked up the ball on edge of the penalty area, played a neat one-two with Scott, and then cleverly dinked the ball over Belles keeper Mary Earps.
Belles soon got a bit of luck which their hard work deserved.
An Everton clearance inside their own area bounced off Williams' shin and looped into the top corner - but the Toffees saw out the remainder of the contest to claim a narrow victory.
Belles are at home to Chelsea on Saturday (2pm).
