Rovers see cup hopes dashed in a shoot-out

SUTTON Rovers saw their hopes of a good run in the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division KO Cup dashed as they lost 5-4 in a first round penalty shoot-out with Hemsworth Town.

With the sides level at 0-0 at the end of normal time the game went into extra-time where Daniel Bell and Craig Musgrave were on target for Rovers with Natesh Patel and Alan Billington replying for Town.

There was a thriller at Swinton Station Athletic with the home side snatching a 5-4 victory over Carcroft Village. Rossington Main had their colours lowered for the first time when they lost 3-2 at Hatfield Town.

In the Premier Division, reigning champions, AFC Sportsman Rovers (Jason Aspinall) went down 3-1 when they hosted Bramley Sunnyside.

Darren Richardson scored the only goal of the game as Brodsworth Welfare beat Kinsley Boys 1-0. Strikes from Ryan Till and David Harrison, plus an own goal, gave South Elmsall United Services a 3-0 success at Edlington Town.

With only one win from their first ten matches, Askern Athletic caused the shock of the Division One KO Cup first round ties by beating high-flying Dunscroft United 3-2. Robert Rowland (2) and Scott Davison shared out the goals with Carl Grant twice reducing the arrears.

Bawtry Town Reserves also created a surprise - Matthew Wilson being on target in their 1-0 win over Hemsworth MW. Dean Daffin and Alex Rennie found the net for Scawthorpe and Bentley Rhinos as they beat Shafton Villa, for whom Chris Glover netted, by the odd goal in three.

Strikes from Sulaiman Deeks-Massiquoi, Emmanuel Bockarie and Kalem Maillie, secured Highwayman a 3-2 victory over Woodlands Rhinos. Gareth Davies scored both Rhinos’ consolation goals. South Kirkby Town had to settle for goals by Shaun Hobson and Tom Mason in their 3-2 defeat against ISG Doncaster.

Denaby United increased their lead at the top of Division One after a 3-0 success over rivals Ackworth United. Jack Vickers, Ryan Oakley and Ainsley Finney all netted for United. There was a 5-2 win for HMP Moorland over Sun FC. Jamie Farrow, Alex Booth, Paul Benfield, Isaiah Cardwell and Jermaine Roberts all chipped in with goals.
