Local football: Villa return to winning ways

ASKERN Villa ended a run of three straight defeats with a 2-0 victory over Grimsby Borough at Manor Way on Saturday, writes Paul Webster.

Villa went ahead on 20 minutes when a ball into the box was flicked on by Matt Holmes for Jordan Irwin to tuck away from close range.

Brian Johnston’s side had to wait until the 84th minute to seal the points as Gary Collier knocked home the loose ball after the Grimsby keeper had fumbled a cross.

It was a pleasing result for Villa keeper Chris Barratt who kept a clean sheet on his debut following his recent move from Pickering Town.
