Former Doncaster Rovers trainee Liam Gaughan bids to move a step closer to winning a professional contract with Leyton Orient, Swindon Town or Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.
The 18-year-old, from Bennetthorpe, is one of 88 players to have progressed through to the semi-final stages of Samsung’s nationwide Win A Pro Contract competition.
Gaughan, who joined Evo-Stick League side Matlock Town in the summer, will compete in an 11-a-side match against fellow hopefuls at Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium on Sunday for a place in the final.
The former Armthorpe Welfare midfielder impressed scouts at his regional trial in Leeds in October.
Liam said: “I am delighted to have progressed to the semi-finals, but I am also keeping a cool head and staying focused.
“To go through as one of 88 from 360 gives me so much more confidence and belief that I can do this, and I’m so grateful to Samsung for the opportunity.
“To be just two matches from a professional contract feels amazing.
“I have an opportunity to change my life and I will try 110 per cent to take that chance.”
Gaughan, who can also play at full back, lists “turning Kyle Bennett inside out against Doncaster Rovers” as his most memorable moment in football on Matlock’s website.
This year’s Samsung’s nationwide Win A Pro Contract competition attracted a record 5,700 entrants. For more details visit www.facebook.com/samsungfootball.
