Football: Late strike condemns Belles to loss at Birmingham

Doncaster Rovers Belles’ wait for a first league win of the season goes on after they were undone by a late Mel Lawley goal at Birmingham.

Boss John Buckley had called for a reaction from his players following the previous weekend’s 4-0 defeat to Chelsea.

And he got just that as battling Doncaster were unlucky not to go in ahead at the break.

Ashleigh Mills went closest to breaking the deadlock when she got on the end of a left wing cross but her effort hit the base of the post.

Both sides continued to cancel each other out in the second half as the game appeared to be heading for a goalless stalemate.

But the Blues snatched a late winner in the 83rd minute when Lawley latched onto Laura Bassett’s clever pass and fired home.

Belles return to action next Wednesday at home to Arsenal.

The Gunners are already in fine form this season and beat Everton 5-0 yesterday. Lincoln overcame Chelsea 2-0 and on Saturday Liverpool win 4-3 at Bristol Academy.
