DEAN Saunders will take charge of Doncaster Rovers for the visit of Crystal Palace tomorrow - following the shock departure of Sean O’Driscoll.

O’Driscoll and assistant boss Richard O’Kelly have been placed on gardening leave after the Rovers board decided to end their five-year spell at the club.

Saunders, 47, had overcome financial difficulties at Wrexham and the Welsh side currently lie second in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

The former Welsh international will be in charge of training today and the club has confirmed he will be in the dugout for the Palace game - although details of his appointment have not yet been revealed.

O’Driscoll’s departure marks an incredible u-turn after chairman John Ryan told the Free Press this week ‘he could not think of any manager better equipped for the job than Sean O’Driscoll.’

A statement on the Rovers website said: “It is with regret that the shareholders of Doncaster Rovers FC have taken the decision based on the long run of poor results that Sean O’Driscoll and Richard O’Kelly be relinquished of their duties.

“They felt that action needed to be taken to address the current position.

“They would like to thank Sean and Richard for all their work during the five years at the club including winning at the Millennium Stadium and Wembley.”

Wrexham released a statement of their own earlier this morning, confirming the departure of Saunders.

It read: “Following an approach from Doncaster Rovers late last night, the club gave permission for Dean Saunders to talk to the Championship team.

“As of this morning Wrexham FC wishes to announce the departure of Dean to take on first team affairs with the Yorkshire side.

“Whilst we are obviously disappointed to lose him, even more so with Wrexham challenging at the top of the Conference, we have to thank Dean for all his hard work and professionalism throughout his three years with the club.”

Doncaster-born Andy Morrell will take charge of first team affairs at the Racecourse Ground on a caretaker basis.
