Doncaster Rovers hope to bridge the gap between junior and senior football with the launch of the town’s first ever under 19 league.
The birth of the new Sunday League, which will be based at the Keepmoat Stadium, follows research published by the Football Association which identified a huge drop off in the number of elder teenagers progressing into adult football.
Rovers also hope the new league will be a breeding ground for youngsters who might have slipped through the club’s net - and offer a route into professional football.
Shaun Lockwood, Rovers’ head of marketing, said: “We’re delighted to launch the Under 19 league and look forward to welcoming teams and players to the league.
“All matches will be played at the Keepmoat Stadium, which underpins the Club Doncaster initiative and reinforces that the stadium is the home for community sports in Doncaster.
“Rovers match tickets, training packages and all kit will be included in the cost of entering a team in the league.
“Professional scouts will be in attendance at games from time to time too, which could provide a fantastic opportunity for youngsters in Doncaster to be scouted by the club.
“Doncaster Rovers is very much a community focused football club, he added.”
“By launching the league we are pledging our support and continued commitment to young adults in the town, while enabling them to showcase their talent and enjoy a great game of football every week at the Keepmoat Stadium.”
