ROVERS boss Dean Saunders insists his side must want to win the most if they are to triumph in the South Yorkshire derby at Barnsley on Saturday.

Saunders – a veteran of Merseyside, Sheffield and Istanbul derbies – believes desire is the key element in clashes between local sides.

He said: “We’ve got to want to win more than them, we need to really want the three points more than them.

“More often than not with derby matches that’s what it’s all about.

“You’ve not got to be frightened to lose. “The players will be up for it and I want to win.

“We want to send our fans home happy.”

Saunders believes hard work from Rovers at Oakwell will be vital due to the way the hosts go about their business.

“Barnsley are a mobile team,” he said.

“They’ve got a lot of energy in the team and they look like they work hard.

“We need to get to the ball first.

“If we can win on Saturday then we go three points behind Barnsley which is a good place to be in. “We’re going there for three points.”

The quest to add at least one new face to the squad before the trip along the A635 is running out of time but Saunders refused to rule out an arrival.

He said: “We’ve got irons in the fire all the time but it’s just about persuading good players to come to Doncaster.

“We’ve had a few ‘nos’ and a few ‘thinking about its’.

“They could say yes at any time.

“One thing I can guarantee is they will be good players if they come in.”
