NEW centre back pairing Rob Jones and Jamie McCombe got a nod of approval from boss Dean Saunders after the duo played a starring role in Rovers’ opening day win at Walsall.

Saunders admitted recently he still has sleepless nights about some of the defending that cost Rovers their place in the Championship, particularly from set pieces and second balls.

But giant defenders Jones and McCombe - dubbed the ‘twin towers’ by Rovers fans - laid down a marker with a dominant display at the Banks’s Stadium.

Saunders said: “I felt a lot more comfortable with Rob Jones and Jamie McCombe heading the ball away from our goal.

“If you don’t deal with first ball you get into trouble.

“It happened for Huddersfield at Cardiff on Friday night, it was just a punt up the pitch and a striker got his head on it.

“I said to our centre backs that wouldn’t have happened if you were playing for Huddersfield.

“Walsall had a lot of corners and possession but we let them have the ball in their own half and made them pass it wide.

“And when the ball comes into the box it’s advantage us.

“We’ve got a big back four who I’d like to think can head the ball away.”
