POPULAR defender James O’Connor has ended his six-year stay at Doncaster Rovers by signing for Derby County for an undisclosed fee.

O’Connor has penned a two-year deal at Pride Park with an option for a further year.

The versatile 27-year-old will team up with fellow 2008 League One play-off final hero Gareth Roberts at County.

O’Connor was named man of the match in Rovers’ memorable win over Leeds United at Wembley and was voted Doncaster’s Player of the Season in 2009/10.

Derby boss Nigel Clough Clough said: “He’s versatile, can play right across the back four, and it’s great to have someone like that.

“He has good Championship experience and he’s impressed us whenever we’ve faced Doncaster. We’re delighted.”

O’Connor was one of Rovers’ higher earners and his departure should give Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders further lee-way to bring in much-needed additions to the squad.
