DEPARTING? Simon Gillett has hinted he has found a new club and will not be returning to Doncaster Rovers.

SIMON Gillett has provided the strongest suggestion yet that he will not be at Doncaster Rovers next season.

The midfielder took to Twitter to wish his former team mates well as they return to pre-season training today and suggested he has found a new club.

He wrote: “Good luck to all the Donny Boys back in training 2day & 4 the season - Pastures new for me, wish everyone @ #drfc the best #itsbeenapleasure”

Gillett’s contract at the Keepmoat expired at the end of June and budget restrictions have prevented boss Dean Saunders from offering new deals.

It was expected the 26-year-old would have been among a small group of out of contract players to be offered new terms once Saunders had freed up funds by moving players on.

Gillett was a near ever present in a side which was chopped and changed regularly last term, making 48 appearances.

Saunders reaffirmed to the Free Press this week that players must be moved on before he can bring back old players or bring in new.

Special dispensation was given by the board to allow Saunders to bring in David Cotterill and Robbie Blake last week but there has been no major change to the situation which has seen his hands tied.

Other out of contract players that have found new clubs are Sam Hird (Chesterfield), Adam Lockwood (Bury), James Hayter (Yeovil Town) and Oscar Radford (Kettering Town).

Saunders told a supporters club meeting last night that former loanee Fabien Robert is unlikely to return to the Keepmoat and fully expects him to find a club in the Championship.

Should Gillett complete his departure, it will bring to an end a three year relationship with Rovers that began with a loan spell from Southampton in October 2009.

The midfielder made the switch permanent in the summer of 2010 and went on to make 70 appearances for Rovers.

Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town and Leeds United have all been linked with a move for Gillett this summer.

Huddersfield snapped up midfielder Adam Clayton from Leeds yesterday.
