ROVERS are in talks with Doncaster-born striker Chris Brown about a move to the Keepmoat Stadium, writes Paul Goodwin.

Brown is a free agent after being released by Preston North End this summer and is thought to be keen on joining his hometown team.

The powerful 26-year-old enjoyed a productive loan spell at Rovers eight years ago when, as a teenager, he helped fire the club to the Third Division title.

Sean O’Driscoll yesterday confirmed that contact had been made with Brown’s agent.

O’Driscoll said: “Chris is someone who is available because of his current contractual situation.

“We’ve spoken to his agent and we’re in the process of trying to work something out that will suit both parties.

“Chris knows the town and the club and he’s someone we’re keen to get on board.

“Talks are ongoing - we’ll see what develops over the next few days.”

Brown scored ten goals in 22 appearances for Doncaster during a memorable 2003/4 campaign, earning a Division Three winners’ medal in the process.

The 6’3” front man broke through the ranks at Sunderland - where his father Alan made a name for himself - before subsequent spells at Norwich City and Preston.

Brown could become Rovers’ fifth new recruit of the summer after defender Richard Naylor signed a short-term deal on Monday, following the arrivals of Tommy Spurr, Kyle Bennett and James Baxendale.

O’Driscoll, meanwhile, said he has NOT made an enquiry about West Bromwich Albion striker Chris Wood - but Celtic defender Josh Thompson is a player possibly on his radar.
