Rovers conceded a late equaliser as their hopes of turning the tables against Preston were denied at the death.
Harry Forrester and Curtis Main struck a quickfire double for Rovers as they overturned Preston’s long time lead through Daniel Johnson in the final ten minutes.
But just when it seemed as though they would return home with all three points, Jermaine Beckford struck a superb volley to earn a share of the spoils for Preston.
Rovers dominated possession the first half but found themselves a goal down ath the break.
Daniel Johnson drilled home from just inside the box to put hosts in front after 13 minutes.
The Aston Villa loanee fired in off the post, delivering a blow to Rovers who had made a bright start against their fellow promotion-chasers with Main and Abdul Razak both crafting early chances.
Main darted down the left, cut inside but drilled well over the bar.
Razak had more success, stinging the palms of former Rovers keeper Sam Johnstone with a fine shot from 20 yards.
For all Rovers’ possession, it was the hosts who looked the more threatening.
Joe Garner should have doubled their advantage but saw a shot deflected narrowly wide from Chris Humphrey’s ball.
And Garner headed inches wide from a Johnson cross moments later.
Rovers started the second half strongly but could not find a way through the Preston defence.
Main almost grabbed the equaliser on 76 minutes, turning and firing but former Rovers loanee Johnstone saved well.
Rovers got their breakthrough in the 81st minute when Forrester combined with the returning James Coppinger and drilled past the static Sam Johnstone to level matters.
And three minutes later Rovers were in dreamland when Main darted in and powered home a header from a Reece Wabara cross.
Preston piled on the pressure in the dying moments and got their reward almost five minutes into added time when Beckford met Paul Huntington’s delivery and fired home from eight yards out.
