Doncaster Rovers set out on the FA Youth Cup trail tonight - and they could not have asked for a tougher test.
Paul Stancliffe’s side got the glamour third round draw that their senior colleagues sadly did not and travel to Hyde FC this evening (7pm) to face Manchester City.
The Blues, coached by former Blackburn winger Jason Wilcox, currently top the Barclay’s U18 Premier League and have won their last eight games, scoring 31 goals in the process.
City’s cosmopolitan squad includes players from all corners of the globe, including highly rated Belgian youth international defender Mathias Bossaerts and France U16 striker Thierry Ambrose.
Rovers warmed up for their biggest game of the season with a 1-1 draw at Chesterfield on Saturday. They currently lie fourth in the Football League Alliance North East Conference with six wins from 12 games.
The winners of tonight’s tie will be at home to AFC Bournemouth or Hereford United in the fourth round.
Rovers famously reached the final in 1988, beating Manchester City along the way, before losing 6-1 on aggregate to Arsenal. They were knocked out by Gateshead last season but gave Chelsea a good run for their money in 2011, losing 2-1.
