The futures of Doncaster Rovers’ up-and-coming prospects look set to be resolved this week.

Under 21s captain Harry Middleton, right back Mitchell Lund and winger Billy Whitehouse are poised to put pen to paper on two-year deals.

Defender Liam Wakefield, meanwhile, is understood to have been offered a six-month extension, with Rovers keen to monitor the 21-year-old’s return to fitness after he suffered a serious ankle injury at the end of last season.

Centre back Ben Askins has also been offered a six-month deal, while teenage midfielder Matthew Davies has had his scholarship extended.

Rovers have altered their policy this summer by opting to offer their most promising youngsters two years instead of one, a reflection of the club’s longer term planning.

Middleton, Lund and Whitehouse are all rated as excellent prospects by Dickov but have also been told to return to training next Monday with the mentality of first team squad players.

Middleton showed real promise for Rob Jones’ under 21s last term and it is hoped he can push on again and challenge for a more regular spot in Dickov’s matchday squad.

Lund slotted in at right back with minimum fuss at the end of last season but Dickov is keen not to rush his development and hopes to sign an experienced right back before the start of the new campaign.

Whitehouse could be set for a breakthrough season after showing good progress under the watchful eye of Dickov and also his mentor James Coppinger. Kyle Bennett’s departure to Portsmouth could open the door for the Mexborough lad to make more of a mark on the first team.
