Former Rovers winger John Buckley believes there is no better midfielder in the Championship than Richie Wellens.
The 33-year-old has been integral in helping to keep Rovers’ survival hopes alive this season, putting in numerous man of the match performances in the heart of Paul Dickov’s midfield.
There were fears that Wellens might not put on a Doncaster shirt again after his short-term deal came to an end earlier in the season. However, Rovers chief Dickov was adamant that the club had to tie down their stand-in skipper if they were to maintain their Championship status.
And former Rovers midfielder Buckley believes that masterstroke of a signing was imperative in Doncaster’s fortunes this season as he waxed lyrical about the former Manchester United trainee, adding that he is the best of his type in the second tier.
“I’ve said it time and time again, Wellens is an incredible player,” said Buckley who had two spells with Rovers during the 1980s.
“You won’t find a better midfielder in this division than Richie, he’s different class.
“He’s struck up an excellent partnership with Paul Keegan who is a bit of a no-nonsense player. I like watching him play. Keegan tidies up everything and allows Richie to go on and attack and he just links up with the front two brilliantly.
“Wellens is such a brilliant player to watch. I’m really glad Doncaster held on to him because there were plenty of teams chasing his signature when his short-term deal ended, it was massively important Rovers kept him. “With Richie in the side and Billy Sharp and Chris Brown upfront, Doncaster will be okay this season.
“I’ve never thought they would go down.”
