Ross Turnbull has signed for Rovers’ South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley following the end of his one year deal.
The highly-rated former Chelsea goalkeeper has signed a two-year deal at Oakwell.
Paul Dickov has spoken all summer of talks being held with Turnbull over extending his stay at the Keepmoat.
However trials for Ben Williams and Jamie Ashdown, which continued this week, suggested his hopes of securing an extended stay for Turnbull were slim.
Turnbull’s switch to Barnsley comes on a day when Richie Wellens said Rovers would find it difficult to hang onto out-of-contract players and trialists due to the club’s budget following the collapse of John Ryan and Louis Tomlinson’s proposed takeover.
Barnsley yesterday snapped up midfielder James Bailey from under Rovers’ noses.
