Mystery surrounds the future of Rovers favourites James Coppinger and Richie Wellens following their absence from last night’s friendly at Grimsby.

Boss Paul Dickov refused to speak about any player following the 4-0 win, where he arrived at half-time following a meeting with the club’s hierarchy.

And The Star understands discussions between Dickov, owner Terry Bramall and chief exec Gavin Baldwin will continue today as the trio thrash out a revised budget.

The collapse of John Ryan and Louis Tomlinson’s takeover of the club has forced an 11th hour change to Dickov’s planned budget, meaning a question mark hangs over transfer business and contract extensions.

Neither Wellens nor out-of-contract ace Coppinger made the trip to the east coast, while Paul Keegan was another absentee.

And of the numerous summer trialists, only Nathan Tyson, Ben Williams and Jamie Ashdown featured.

Dickov told the Star: “Sorry, I just can’t tell you anything at the moment. I would if I could, but I can’t.”

Assistant manager Brian Horton was handed post-match interview duties and would also not be drawn on any player who did not feature in the game.

Horton did confirm that Paul Quinn has resumed training but was not fit to make the trip to Grimsby.

Despite the difficulties, Rovers turned in their best performance of pre-season, with goals from Tyson, Kyle Bennett, Theo Robinson and Alex Peterson.
