John Ryan hopes that One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson will eventually take complete control of Doncaster Rovers.

Rovers are today set to announce the takeover of the club by former chairman Ryan and the Bessacarr-born popstar after issues holding up the proposed buy-out, have now been resolved.

Cosmetic surgery businessman Ryan, who resigned as Rovers chairman last November after 15 years at the helm, says 22-year-old boyband megastar Tomlinson reminds him a lot of his younger self.

And he believes that his partnership with the chart-topping superstar is exactly what the club needs.

“He’s a bit like a young John Ryan, in the sense that he’s ambitious for Rovers and he really loves the club,” said the 64-year-old who will be a ‘co-chairman’ alongside Tomlinson.

“Although we’re at opposite ends of the age spectrum, I think that helps.

“As a combination we’re great because he’s a superstar, he attracts younger people, and I’m probably the more established businessman that has been through it all before.

“We are really a tremendous symbiotic relationship and I think that signals as a very healthy future for Doncaster Rovers.”

On Tomlinson’s involvement, Ryan added: “He’s as keen as mustard. He can’t be there all of the time because he’s on tour and things like that but I said ‘Don’t worry, I’ll keep you informed by email, by text, by phone’.

“He wants to know everything that’s going on and I’m delighted that he’s so keen.

“Eventually, I sincerely hopes he takes over the club from myself and takes it on to greater and greater heights.

“I think that with Louis on-board, anything is possible.

“In his own life, he’s gone from being a waiter at Doncaster Rovers to being one of the biggest superstars in the world. So, in his mind anything must be possible and it certainly is in my mind too.

“We’ve just got to get the Doncaster public to back us and say ‘Come on, let’s give it a go’.”

A press conference is planned tomorrow at 4pm in London, barring any last minute hitches.

Tomlinson, who signed as a Rovers player last season, and Ryan are understood to have exchanged contracts with current Rovers major shareholders Terry Bramall and Dick Watson.

The full takeover is expected to be completed in July.
