Andy Williams hopes Doncaster Rovers can hold onto their loan stars until the end of the season.

But, if they can’t, the 29-year-old striker says it is important they are replaced with players of a similar calibre.

Conor Grant yesterday extended his loan stay until January 2 - at which point his Everton teammate Felipe Mattioni’s temporary deal at the Keepmoat Stadium will also expire.

Craig Alcock and Cameron Stewart will also see their deals run out in the coming weeks.

Williams was part of a Swindon Town team that was heavily supplemented by loan players last season and went onto reach the League One play-off semi-finals. And he has been impressed by Rovers’ loan arrivals.

“I’ve had a lot of experience in my career with teams where we’ve had a lot of loan players. You know they come and go,” he said.

“It’s important if they do go, and they don’t come back, to find someone of a similar calibre to come in and replace them.

“The lads that have come in have been a breath of fresh air. They’ve had a really positive impact on the team and hopefully we can keep them until the end of the season if at all possible.”

Williams has been equally impressed with new boss Darren Ferguson.

“He stamped his authority on things quite quickly so we know what he’s about,” said Williams.

“Since he came in we’ve been on a good run but things can change very quickly in football. Time will tell in terms of our reaction, if we lose a few games for example.

“At the moment it’s still quite early stages and you can see from the way we’re playing that we’re enjoying things at the moment. Long may that continue.”
