Dean Furman is all set to report for pre-season training with Rovers on Monday after his contract with Oldham comes to an end.
Paul Dickov – who managed Furman at the Latics – confirmed to the Star he has spoken with Furman’s agent and is confident a deal will be agreed early next week.
The 25-year-old South Africa skipper will be at Cantley Park for training from Monday and is likely to play some part in the pre-season friendly at Frickley Athletic on Tuesday.
Dickov said: “I made Dean captain of Oldham when he was just 22 and that tells you all you need to know.
“He’s already a quality player and he’s got a bright future ahead of him. I’ve spoken to his agent and I’m confident we will get something done.”
Midfielder Furman impressed on loan with Rovers during the last six weeks of the season.
Paul Quinn will not be returning to Rovers.
Unlike the other players offered new deals, Quinn failed to report for pre-season training this week.
And as far as Dickov is concerned, the matter is closed.
He said: “Like all the lads we offered new deals to, Paul was invited to training. But we’ve heard nothing from him since so we’ll leave it there.”
Dickov says he remains confident the other players offered new contracts will sign.
Kyle Bennett, Chris Brown, Andy Griffin, Paul Keegan, Jon Maxted, Tommy Spurr, Neil Sullivan and Liam Wakefield trained all week with Rovers.
