The veteran defender joined Rovers as a free agent on a two-month deal at the end of August to add cover at the height of the club’s injury crisis.

Despite Richardson having made just four appearances – two of them seeing him taken off injured – since his arrival, Darren Ferguson is keen to retain his services as he looks to ensure he has enough cover.

Though the new deal has yet to be fully ratified, Ferguson insists there are no issues.

“It’s just about tying it up,” he said.

“It’s agreed because his last game would have been last Saturday but he’s still with us.

“We extend that from there.”

Richardson is currently in recovery from a calf injury suffered in the win at Portsmouth at the start of the month.

And Ferguson has taken the opportunity to bring the 35-year-old up to full fitness as he missed pre-season training following his release by Rotherham United.

Richardson is likely to be back in action in either the FA Cup clash with Oldham Athletic on November 5 or the Checkatrade Trophy final group stage tie with Port Vale three days later.

“He’s out on the grass and I’m going to leave him with the fitness coaches,” Ferguson said.

“He’s going to do a mini pre-season.

“I won’t be considering him for Saturday. I’m looking to get him two weeks of training.

“Hopefully we can get him to a good level of fitness and the cup matches will be when he comes back.”

Another recovering player targeting a return in the cup matches is Craig Alcock.

The defender has yet to feature this season after suffering ankle ligament damage in the summer.

But Ferguson is pleased with the progress the 28-year-old has made.

“We’ll see how he is Thursday, whether there’s any reaction,” he said.

“He’s had two really hard days into him.

“Saturday will probably is going to come too early for him.

“I’m not going to rush the boy and the advantage then is he’ll have another week’s training and we’ll have the two cup games.

“Certainly if he came through a good two weeks of training without any games, he’d certainly be in consideration for the cup games.”
