Harry Forrester has been advised to take a leaf out of the book of his boss Paul Dickov when it comes to managing his discipline on the pitch.

Dickov was a notoriously fiery forward during his playing career but was sent off just once.

And he has told Forrester – who has been sent off twice in three games this season – to be clever when out on the pitch.

“Harry couldn’t believe the answer when I asked him how many times I’d been sent off in my career,” Dickov said. “It was only once.

“I was trying to say to him that you’ve got to be a little bit more clever.

“I would always get booked in the first five minutes because you’d have to toe the line after that.

“If you’ve been booked, you have to toe the line, especially nowadays.

“I could get away with going in two-footed two or three times before I even got booked but it’s changed so much.

“You have to have a calm head.”

Dickov has defended Forrester despite his indiscretions so far this term and he insists the midfield ace is not a bad lad.

He said: “He’s a player I think has got the potential to be a top, top player.

“He’s not a bad egg, he’s not a maverick or any of the other things I’ve heard said about him.

“If anything the frustration of having the injuries of last season and the frustration of knowing what he can bring to the team and what a top player he can be is possibly coming out.”

Forrester was the real difference maker against Fulham in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night following his half time introduction on his return from suspension.

His direct running and trickery caused plenty of problems for the hosts and enabled Rovers to make a real fight of the tie after going two goals down in the first half.

And Dickov said Forrester returned to action with a point to prove.

He said: “What probably hurt Harry more than anything else was knowing he had jeopardised his place in the team.

“He sat and watched the win against Chesterfield and saw the forwards playing so well. The front three were outstanding.

“But he’s responded exactly in the manner you would want.

“He showed exactly what he is capable of. Players react when he’s out there because they know what he’s capable of.”
