Paul Dickov secured his first competitive win in charge of Doncaster Rovers but there is still plenty of room for improvement.
Bongani Khumalo’s 89th minute header earned the Championship newcomers a hard fought 1-0 win over plucky League Two outfit Rochdale which sealed a place in the second round of the Capital One Cup.
“The positives are that we kept a clean sheet and we’re in the hat for the next round,” said Dickov. “When we were good, we were very good.
“When we were poor, we were very poor.
“There’s plenty to work on,” he added. “We created plenty of chances but we need to put them away.
“The good thing is that we got the win and we’re in the next round.”
New loan signing Reece Wabara went straight into the side but was forced off with cramp midway through the second half.
In a similar fashion to Saturday, Rovers looked bright in periods going forward but struggled to find a killer ball or finish - until Khumalo did just enough to divert David Cotterill’s late free kick past Josh Lillis in the Rochdale goal.
The draw for the second round will take place tomorrow at 12.30pm.
